RVSS systems consist of day and night cameras mounted on towers that monitor elements of interest through video transmissions to a central control room or command and control (C2) that increase situational awareness capabilities tenfold.
The benefits are enhanced persistent surveillance capabilities through a secure digital system, improved video quality for C2 operations and improved detection and situational awareness.
The RVSS unit is a mission-critical component that consists of a collection of daytime and electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) video cameras, a laser illuminator, and other support equipment depending on the specific site. The RVSS sensors are mounted atop the towers and include a combination of the following equipment:
These cameras, along with a laser illuminator, projector, and speaker are mounted on a PTU to form a "sensor suite." The PTU allows the line of sight (LoS) of the sensors and laser illuminator to be smoothly and accurately controlled from a distance to view potential items of interest (IoI).

- Electro-optical / infrared (EO / IR) short / medium range camera (SR / MR) with optional laser illuminator and projector mounted on a pan-tilt unit (PTU) to provide directional control of the camera;
- Long range EO/IR camera (LR) with laser illuminator and optional PTU mounted projector to provide directional control of the camera;
- High definition SR optical camera;
- Wide angle EO / IR camera offering a 180 degree field of view. This camera is required for specific RVSS sites and is mounted on the RVSS tower in a position selected based on operational requirements; and
- Speaker mounted on a PTU
